Green Schoolyards for Urban Ecosystems in Freetown

The Green Schoolyards for Urban Ecosystem Restoration project aims to transform fifty public schools in Freetown by 2030  into living learning landscapes that restore biodiversity, improve microclimates, and strengthen youth leadership in ecosystem restoration.

Schools in Freetown often lack green spaces due to urbanisation, land degradation, and limited environmental education opportunities. This project will establish native plant gardens, shade trees, pollinator habitats, and small vegetable beds managed by student eco-clubs. These restored schoolyards will provide ecological benefits such as soil regeneration, increased biodiversity, and reduced heat stress. It will also improve student well-being and learning conditions.

The project will train 1000 students and 500 teachers in urban ecosystem restoration, composting, seed propagation, and biodiversity monitoring. Each school will receive restoration kits including tools, seedlings, soil enhancers, and educational materials. The project integrates restoration with education by embedding practical activities into environmental education.

By enabling young people to lead hands-on restoration in their own learning environments, the project contributes directly to the UN Decade goals while building long-term community ownership. The schoolyards will serve as replicable models for nature-positive urban spaces across Sierra Leone.
