Community-Led Ecosystem Restoration
The Community-Led Ecosystem Restoration project empowers local communities in Sierra Leone to restore degraded landscapes while enhancing biodiversity, climate resilience, and sustainable livelihoods. By 2030, the initiative aims to engage 10 communities in hands-on restoration efforts that combine traditional knowledge and participatory approaches.

Many rural and peri-urban areas face challenges induced by deforestation, soil degradation, and biodiversity loss, threatening local livelihoods and ecosystem health. Top-down approaches have often failed to generate lasting ownership or integrate local knowledge.
RSI’s solution places communities at the centre. Together with local leaders, we co-design restoration plans that include:
-
Reforestation and agroforestry with native species
-
Soil regeneration and watershed restoration
-
Biodiversity monitoring and habitat restoration
By empowering communities as co-creators, the project aims to restore over 1,000 hectares, improve soil fertility and biodiversity, strengthen climate resilience, and generate sustainable livelihood opportunities. This approach ensures restoration is both ecological and socially just, fostering resilient landscapes and empowered communities for the long term.
